Something this chaotic and GOOD can’t just be spur of the moment.

Well, I guess it COULD be… but the lines, the conversations, the things going on don’t feel like someone just made it up on the fly. I mean, if you were just making it up on the fly, why would you need a writer? You just start drawing weirdness and finish up.

Judging by his reaction, I would say it’s the other way around based on their reactions. After all, how would she know about the concepts of names or naming if she hadn’t somehow known about about Lemmo naming Pericles Van Mudgett? Of course, from what we’ve seen the bugs don’t have much more success than the penguins (getting cut in half by shovel beam, crashing into mountain, that other bug knocking down Fergus’ lighthouse…) Though, to be fair, those collisions seemed more to be consequences of apathy rather than altogether lack of ability.

Also, it seems like the main ammunition of both races would be insults. In which case the bugs have already won. :-P

The penguins certainly have something of a mission statement here, and we know of at least two Bugs in the world.
I suppose it depends on whether there’s an even enough match of penguins vs. Bugs to create a real enmity, and whether these penguins can get their damn act together to launch a meaningful strike. If somebody can’t touch you but can say mean things, is he your enemy?

It may be that she has never seen real (or at least focussed) fire before; her people cannot interact with solid objects, so it would make sense that they have never made or been around fire that was not made of the mist that makes them. I used the word “make” too much, didn’t I? And it looks like those two lumps on the right are waving at Lemmo and the girl.

There has been a large history of things crashing- the seperate halves of the bug, the big ‘ol mountain scenery, Fergus’ lighthouse, that robot Lemmo and Aric were riding, and now this ship. Amusing. Maybe we’ll see the guts of that thing yet.
So far, this still supports my previous prediction about the jet consisting of a colony of symbiotic organisms, Lemmo befriending them as he reassembles it, Aric befriending the bugs, and a giant war between the jets and the bugs.

It may sound strange, but in my opinion Misty is actually Aric… I mean, everything that disappears has something to replace it… And I don’t see Aric for 4 strips already… after the cookie monster ate him… so… My theory is that cookie monster collects everything, that is material in this universe… the problem is… where do all the new things come from then… With everything said, i came to a conclusion… This universe is cookie monsters stomach… Which sounds crazy, but i’m a programmer, so i like recursion…

Ray: I’m inclined to disagree with this interpretation of the comics so far. I suspect, insofar as we can trace her to anything but the whimsy of the authors, that her origins are the same as those of all the Unsettlers (or Adumbrates, as another here put it), which would place it near the Shovel Beam. However, I cannot speak as an authority on this matter.

Incidentally, since the bugs were piloted by bugs, wouldn’t the jet be piloted by a sentient jet inside of another jet?

Misty (if hat is indeed what we’re calling her) seems quite shaken by this recent event. Well, I would be too, if a jet took off through my body, but it seems as if she either didn’t expect it or didn’t expect Lemmo to take it in such stride. Either way, she appears to be unfamiliar with the sponteneity of this universe. That’s my interpretation anyway. It could just be a breaking of the fourth wall (as she is looking at “us”) with comedic intent.

And joebobs0n, you’d actually find two bugs. One really rude insect pilotting another slightly less rude (or simply less talkative) insect. And maybe duplicates of each, as the “fly” split in half, and in one of the previous strips the jet did appear to have two distinct pods.

Visual art appreciation was never my strong suit. I took a whole college course on the matter in order to shore up my difficulties in the area. I got a solid B, not a bad grade overall, and still discerned that I don’t care.
Sorry. I’m here for story, presentation, surrealism and script. The art is there, but I just never notice it no matter how good it is. Just not wired for it.

Not an elegant solution. No, in truth it is a road and that plane should not be landing on or taking off from it. As a result, there will be a crash, and the individual pieces of the aircraft will scatter, open their eyes, and realize they landed all wrong, then reassemble and taxi until they find a proper runway. This will provide Lemmo with a new vehicle for a while, as he befriends and assists the disassembled talking parts of the collective airplane organism (or cao for short.)
However, Aric will in the meantime have stuck with the familiar. Unable to live in the static alone, and unable to stand Lemmo as a catalyst for change, he will return to the certainty of the bugs. The bugs have a distinct dislike for the occasionally sleepy caos, and Lemmo and Aric will find themselves on opposite sides of what amounts to an all-out war between the flying factions of the setting.

this reminds me of the old cartoons where the girl gets tied to the railroad tracks and the hero must save her before the train comes. This time I think that Lem is going to have to save the damsel because he will focus on her, thereby making her solid, thereby (again) PUTTING her in the danger he has to rescue her from.

Or he’ll realize that as long as she’s insubstantial she’ll be fine.

Looking way too deeply into the meaning of this comic is what makes it great. People guessing what will happen next, and occasianally being right, is half the fun of reading. There is no “too far” I say! Is not a cult following what every cartoonist dreams for? I woulnd’t be surprised if a wikipedia entry popped up, explaing and detailing all the strange physical properties and the odd cultures.

Come on people. Don’t leave me hanging. It’s been said, now someone needs to make it happen.

And on another note, we’ve had our question of how the road (runway) would effect the unsettler woman; it appears to have very small physical interaction, which would suggest that the amount of “focus” an unsettler has proportionally changes how physical objects interact with them. So an unsettler about to get hit by a bus need only become anonymous to escape danger.

And I’m no aeronautical engineer, but that runway seems like a very bad place to launch a plane.
