I found Blankit by chance about a month ago, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it – reminds me very much of conversations on the nature of reality I’ve had with friends. I’m sorry I missed your earlier work (and now regrettably it seems I can’t read it).

I do remember references from Tatsuya Ishida, as well as Greg Dean to THE HotSoup and a comic drawing weekend. While I certainly can’t say how you relate to them now, I think that matters less than how you think they do, so I’d say just do what you want. I know what striking out on your own can cost (I’ve got the bankruptcy to prove it), and I also know the regretful happiness of a salvaged life (which is a pretty good life). Still, keep going, keep drawing, and keep writing. Fame isn’t what you create, it’s what you do and who you are, and the fact that I want to read your work (which before you posted this, I didn’t know existed) speaks well for it.

Keep trying, and keep enjoying the life you’ve built no-matter what comes of it. We’ll keep reading.

No, sounds like this was done recently and the “new concept” is something new (but he wouldn’t tell me what it was).

It’s interesting when you read this last strip how it looks like they left it on an intentional cliffhanger as if they know what’s happening next but want us to twist a little…but at the same time made it sound like they just ran out of ideas.

I’m assuming this “baring-your-soul” comic was written recently? I’m asking, because as I re-read the 3:30 pm page, I thought to myself, “This pages seems almost as if it was written before he even started Blank It. Like the ‘new concept’ he just penned was Blank It, and the domain name he bought was blankitcomics.com”. If you look at that page I’m sure you’ll see how one might get that impression. So now I’m all confused. O.o

Indeed, it would be nice to feel hopelessly bewildered again about now.
I know, I know… It’s only been a little over a week since my last post. Still, while it’s a bit much to expect a new father to produce a comic for me in the intervening time (believe me, I know), signs of life would be appreciated.

speculation is what helps fuel the stock market. people who invest in the stock market are called speculators.

if there were no speculators (who speculate) there would be no reason to have a stock market. nobody would buy shares of a company, so you wouldn’t be able to put a value on something like that.

I was just going for a fairly clever comment.

As for applications, the Cyn Wolf series suggested cars that run off of stupidity. The pirate captain in Dubious Company made a flying ship that runs off drunkenness. I’m fairly certain that speculation as a fuel source would power crime-scene investigation equipment.

Lemmo 2 looks and feels very different from the normal Lemmo. The original Lemmo has grown to have a more rugged, mature face, with the sideburns and long shaggy hair, and often has a thoughtful expression lately; whereas L2 so far has shown a similar, but more whimsical expression, and a more exaggerated, cartoonish look.

Also, the octo-ribbons (somebody think of a witty name for them, fast) look fun. Let’s hope they’re not just scraps of ribbon and are actually a new species or something.

Well, that lasted all of two seconds.

I feel like they’ve now officially entered some alternate universe where everything that happened to them is happening all over again, but slightly different. For instance, instead of a giant bug ship flown by bugs that sprays confetti, we now have a giant spaceship flown by who knows what that drops little purple octopuses.

Or this could be the same universe just continuing to be completely insane. I’m flexible.

Anyone else notice that alternate-Lemmo’s spiky bangs are flatter and straighter than original-Lemmo’s? Or is that just on this page.

My first thought was that this was a bug ship. Since that’s what happened the first time through. Also it seems to holding altitude better than the penguins I remember.

Another idea is that this could be some whole new species. After all the new Socks is now a turtle and we never saw THAT before.

Whoa, sudden Wednesday update!

Anyway from the looks of things that penguin plane looks more advanced (well maybe not advanced. Complicated?) than the previous one. With big gigantic ridiculous-looking pitchfork intakes!

And for the record I’m not really all that surprised by the octoribbons. Penguins keep a whole bunch of random junk in their aircraft. Most of which seems to want to hurt Marina…

WOOOW.I have a theory. They’re in the same universe, but they’re duplicates, and their events are just happening at different times for both pairs. That would make some sense. And I go with marshmallow radiation, because it would somewhere explain where their clothes went in the beginning.

Most likely, nearly every event is repeated an infinite number of times with slight differences. It’s quite likely if every Aric and Lemmo is exactly the same, and only their clothes are different.

This leads me to wonder whether the Aric and Lemmo we know are both the same ones we met in the beginning, or if one of them is a completely different Aric or Lemmo

It took me a minute to realize the turtle was talking, at which point Lemmo’s comment made more sense (the speech bubble pointy bit confused me). Interesting that Marina’s first reaction was to grab the turtle. And where the crap are they all RUNNING to, anyway? XD At first they seem to be running away from each other, but this clearly ceases to be a point when the two Aric’s meet up in the last panel and are now running in the same direction and together. So basically, everyone is running in circles. Which is pretty natural for people in this comic, come to think of it.

I’m pretty sure Lemmo told Marina his name, and might’ve told her Aric’s name too, off-panel. Or we still don’t know how this freaky world works yet.

Also, the other Aric may be called Aric too, so the turtle didn’t need to be introduced to know his name. And for that matter he may have been referring to ‘his’ Aric.

Just when I think this comic could not possibly get ANY STRANGER…you guys raise the bar three more notches.
And this, of course, is why I love you all so much. XD Can’t WAIT to see what the crap THIS is about.
Hm. It seems alternate-Lemmo-and-Aric not only have different shirts and hat, but a different random sock animal, as well. Or perhaps this one came from alternate-Aric’s shoes, since he’s obviously not wearing any right now. Another piece of evidence for the turtle being Shoes: he’s running every time we see him. So CLEARLY, he was made from an implement commonly used in running! It’s clear logic.

And now the REAL question is: when shoe/sock-turtle inevitably gets split in half, will the two halves be dumber, like Socks 1 & 2, or, in the forces of alternativity, twice as smart as the turtle was to begin with?

These are important questions, people! Except when they’re not.

@MarshmallowRadiation If that’s the case, then are there a bunch of shovel beams? We’ve always considered it to be just one, and it was the only real landmark. The idea that it might not have been the first one is almost scary, though it does explain how a civilisation was created in a few minutes around the beam (they had been there for much longer), and why the shovel was a different colour when Van Mudgett had it.

Oh yeah! There was a flying object the last time this happened, to. It was a bug both times (metaphorically speaking) :)

Instead of assuming this is some kind of a time loop, maybe this is somehow a new Lemmo and Aric. After all, Socks is now a turtle. Maybe the two new characters picked different names?

Stream of conscience: maybe there is also a bug flying over that will somehow stop Aric’s fall (rise?).

I love the parallelism. Almost the same, but not quite. I seem to remember Aric got most of his clothes off shortly after this point the first time through. I wonder what Marina thinks of apparel theater.

Well it seems that the robot was being pulled up, and Aric was being pulled down when they fuzes and he started floating.
Now it was switched, and then switched back when the switch was hit and they went through the tube.
Each time it was switched however he was still being pulled in two separate directions.

At the moment it looks like the best way to fix at is with the shovel beam…

Can anyone think of an occasion on which he’s been more eloquent? He’s always had the mind for it, but this might be the most helpful and intelligent argument I’ve heard Aric make.
Though I suppose we can infer some eloquence and brilliance in his swearing when he lifted the island off the purple sea with his angry insults. Sadly, it was blinding and ear-shattering, so we can only guess at what he said.

nope norimori the hand juice machine was broken and all the hand juice spilled into the ground when last we saw it a crab claw cut the intelligible sox into parasox which have the attention span of toddlers.
by now the area may be a forest of arms and or other appendages but the hand juice may be no more.
however i won’t rule it out but i do think it is unlikely.

Aric needs to shove something in his roboarm’s mouth. Normally he is good at loosing his clothing. You’d think he would figure out to sacrifice a sock for the purpose. Maybe they will remember that the shovel beam does “elective surgery.”

The floating situation could become a problem if Lemmo let’s go. I wonder what would happen then. With no hole in the floor, maybe Aric would fall up until he smashed into the underside of the floor. Would that put him back with the robots? I wonder.

Of course it’s a possibility. You just have to either a) stick with parts of the universe that have already been shown, and/or b) make new ones that seem like they would actually show up. Have you seen how long these characters have spent at some of the places they’ve visited? Someone could write a whole fanfic (or at least a chapter or two, or just a short fanfic) that takes place in only one location.

I mean, yeah, I get that this fictional universe is a lot more dynamic than most, but I honestly don’t see how that could make it “impossible”, or even very difficult, to write a Blank It fanfic.

More like two months and a couple of days. Just give the guys time. Maybe they will be able to continue their project, and maybe they won’t. Will I be saddened if they need to stop? Most assuredly. – However, there have been delays before, and Lemmo has mentioned several times that his personal life does come first. – Reading this comic has been a privilege and nothing more… Hence why demanding more updates is something that should be stopped.

I look forward to the return of this comic, but if it doesn’t happen, at least I will always have one of the books the guys released.

I think one of the requirements for a fanfic is a fairly established universe. The main premise of Blank It is the fact that the universe is constantly forming around the characters, so I think fanfics aren’t really a possibility. I’m sure there’s some aspiring literary genius on the interwebz wanting to make a good story, but I doubt they’d choose Blank It as their canon, no matter how good it is.

Perclies Van midget travels to Area 51 using the device. The guards who were on duty last night try to kill him and take the item back but to no avail. Pericel Van midget dicedes make a deal with the gaurds who were on duty last night. They help him kill Lemmo and Aric and in return he will give them the device back and no one will have to know that they let the place be robed by a drunk guy.

I know. one of us should write Blankit fanfic, about a guy named Joe. His girlfreind broke up with him so he went and got so drunk that he blacked out. what did he do in the time while he was blacked out you ask, many things including robing area 51. The item in question that he stole teleported him to blankitverse in the air above the purple sea. The alchol in his system made him faint just before he hit the water. He wakes up on the moutiness shore of where the angry bug whose name I don’t recall lives. All he remebers of the night before was his girlfreind breaking up with him and geting very drunk.

Listen, ye verily worshipped authors of greatness, I’ve been checking Blank It daily since the update freeze. I understand the important familial obligations you must attend to and appreciate them, but is there some date estimate you could give as to when we can expect another update? Not in any way to rush a detailed and beloved comic or a family that needs attention, I’d just like to stop checking daily and instead come back when there might be something new. Just a suggestion. I actually wouldn’t mind having a child at the moment. Most of my time is spent playing games with friends or making music that hardly ever gets listened too, and at 22 years of age, I’m already feeling like I’m 40.

I’ll think about settling down with a family someday, for now though I need to find a wonderful lady that will want to raise such a family with me.

You’re lucky, guy. Take damn good care of that family, and don’t worry about us. :D

I can’t help but notice the robot hand never speaks any pleasant thoughts. Nor does it say what Aric is going to say, voicing instead only thoughts he didn’t feel like saying aloud.
This implies to me either that Aric, on the whole, has a very dark and unpleasant mind; or that the robot only says the unpleasant things he thinks, and the random ones (such as the portal/tube thing.)

That said, I imagine at some point the robot hand will say something useful that popped into his mind, but which he wouldn’t have said.

OBITUARY FOR THE LATE MR. COMMON SENSE

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense,who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: Knowing when to come in out of the rain; why the early bird gets the worm; Life isn’t always fair; and Maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don’t spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6 year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get Parental consent to administer Calpol, sun lotion, or a band-aid to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn’t defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 3 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, Someone Else Is To Blame, and I’m A Victim. Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

RE the earlier comments: Some stories just need the romance. Sometimes it’s an indispensable part of the plot. Other stories don’t need it. I don’t know where Aric and Lemmo are taking this, so I don’t know whether romance is needed or unneeded, though I guess the latter. I’m sure the Blankit team is good enough at writing to know what plot elements should and shouldn’t be there in any case.

I was thinking earlier, “look at that distance; they’ll never make it. Wait, gravity’s been flipped once; maybe someone will flip it again.” I did not expect the way it happened though. Even when Blankit is predictable, it’s predictable in unpredictable ways.

I’m going to predict that the tube takes them to some totally different place, far from robots. While typing that, I thought: the tube does not say they will all go to the same anywhere and Marina is not holding Lemmo’s other hand. Are they about to split up? I hope not!

I’m in my early 30′s, and just had my first couple kids this decade. I also just lost my own grandpa (the one dedicated in the book), so thinking about the generation shifts really isn’t a stretch.

I just remembered this comic after not having read this since 2009, I must say that this comic and the issues it poses on my mind continue to amuse me.

I first read this comic with a friend, who I have not been able to see for the last year, and remembering this friendship has given me this day. I will definitely be adding this as a bookmark.

This is the Blank-It universe. It thrives on the strange and unpredictable, as Lemmo and Aeric stride across the land like a pair of Titans, discovering all manner of new and odd creatures. Romance, unless well done, would (at least to me) seem somewhat out of place. Especially as the main cast have only known each other for a short(ish) time.

However, if it can be done, and done well, than I will have little problem with it.

Or at the very least, I hope it doesn’t happen. I feel it would cheapen her role as the strong leader of her people.

Holy crap! That’s part of the reason *I* liked “I, Robot”, too! KINDRED SPIRIT! I like how you can interpret their relationship however you like, there’s nothing saying they would get together after the events of the movie, and at the same time there’s nothing saying they won’t. Depends on how much you read into Calvin’s smile in their last scene together, I guess. I thought it was refreshing that there were no romantic scenes. If the movie had been an hour or two longer, or if the film had been less heavy on the action and more heavy on the character development, I think it could have happened. Even if that had been the writers’ goal, there just wouldn’t have been time to make them progress that far without it feeling fake and rushed. I like that they kept them as just friends, and more importantly, made it work. You didn’t finish the movie thinking, “But the movie can’t be over! They didn’t kiss! WTF???”

And don’t worry Renee, “I, Robot” is now subject to “It Was His Sled”, and even if it weren’t, that isn’t much of a spoiler since it’s not very important.

I agree with both you and inusushi that having a male and a female together doesn’t necessarily mean there has to be romance, but most people are going to expect it. Also, I know from trying to write a Portal fanfic involving Doug and Chell that it is REALLY hard to write about two straight people of the opposite sex, with nothing to do other than use teamwork, make small talk, and stare at each other, without things starting to go in that direction, for the same reason that it’s hard for things not to go in that direction if you have that situation in real life – because in most cases the sexual tension is eventually going to manifest, whether anyone (writer, reader, characters) wants it to or not. (I don’t want it to in my fanfic but DAMMIT it’s like they’re MAKING it happen! I swear fiction has a mind of its own, totally independent from the writer… Grrr…) And even if you manage not to write it into a story, people are going to READ IT into the story, because it’s hard to steer them away from it. Although it sounds like you think that always pairing the male and female lead feels unnatural, in a lot of cases trying to *not* pair them would feel unnatural, because the audience would feel the sexual tension even if Word of God decided that the characters didn’t. It’s hard to make it work. The only written example I can think of where an author managed to make that work, is “First Test”, a novel in a series that’s like a sequel to the “Song of the Lioness” series (about Alanna…the first female knight…like “Mulan” meets medieval setting…anybody?), where the main characters are Keladry and her mentor Nealan. If you *really* wanted to you could think there might be something there, but the author does a good job of keeping the atmosphere at “just friends”. For instance, Nealan very obviously has a crush on one of the teachers at the castle. On top of that, Keladry notices this right away but shows no signs of jealousy, and merely finds it amusing, and the point isn’t explored in any more depth than that. Then, as they get to know each other, Nealan shows a very touching concern for Kel’s safety when he realizes that she’s taken to patrolling the hallways for bullies and sometimes gets into fights with them. In fact it’s highly amusing how much he freaks out when she goes looking for fights and gets hurt. In any other novel/movie/tv show, his behaviour would make you think that he “like” likes her. But somehow it doesn’t do that in “First Test”. I don’t know how the author did it. I wish I knew, because that’s a damn useful skill, and one that I am in dire need of at the moment.

Anyway, there are times in fiction when a male lead/female lead pairing feels right, and times where it doesn’t feel right, and in this case (Lemmo/Marina) it feels right, at least to me. And the “even though they’re in the middle of a nigh apocalyptic situation, trying to figure out how to solve the problem” is more like an “ESPECIALLY BECAUSE”, because of the whole hardship bringing people together thing. You would expect people in such a relationship to at least develop an attraction, even if it later turns out to be superficial and doesn’t go anywhere (or goes somewhere but wasn’t meant to because they aren’t compatible after all). If there were more people in this group, even if Marina was still the only female, it would feel a little more natural for everyone to just remain friends. But with only three people in the group, it wouldn’t be that weird for Lemmo and Marina to pair off.

I guess my point is just because the “throwing the female and male lead together” thing is overdone, doesn’t mean it’s contrived. Sometimes it is, like in “How to Train Your Dragon”, but usually it makes sense.

Wow this is a long, rambling comment with way too many digressions. Am I just tired? I think I’m tired. Better say goodnight before I write a goddamn essay. Goodnight!

I agree with inusushi. There’s no reason that romance is necessary just because there is a character of the female persuasion present. I hope I’m not spoiling the movie for everyone after all these years, but one of the reason I like “I Robot” so much (despite its artistic freedom) is because the writers didn’t say, “Hey! We have a lead male and lead female! We MUST throw them in a broom closet together, even though they’re in the middle of a nigh apocalyptic situation, trying to figure out how to solve the problem, and have only known each other for a MINUTE!”

Contrived “relationships” bug me, to say the least.

I think the tube is deliberately trying to be unreachable. I think it is alive and trying to move itself away from them and the only reason that they haven’t noticed is because they always look down to get another person and it moves during that time. In addition to random man’s answer, it’s worth noting that the return of his arm is 100% intentional, i.e. not a mistake. (Lemmo says so in the comment thread of the strip random man referred to.)

IIRC, from the comments in previous strips it seems that everyone’s been baffled as to why Aric’s having such a hard time. But now we can clearly see that his gravity is the same as the robots’ (since robot and human gravity seem to always be opposing each other here), likely because of the robot attached to his arm.

Can’t tell if dumb, or AWESOME idea. Would this make hand juice Lemmo’s idea? Are penguins Lemmo’s idea? What constitutes an “idea” in the canvas? Also, no interjections from handi-aric, this saddens me.
