[edit] Physical Description
Often only barely visible if at all, an Unsettler or Adumbrate (both names internal rather than canon) will appear a pale, colorless human of varying solidity when it desires or inspires attention. By their own description, their normal, obscure state is "blurred."
Making certain leaps by watching Misty in action, it appears that even when slightly blurred or discolored they are not greatly affected by solid matter. Likewise, while the actual effect is presently unknown, it seems they are not thrilled by the premise of being named while presently bisected by solids.
From Wiktionary:
Etymology: Latin adumbrātus "represented in outline", from adumbrāre "cast a shadow on", from umbra "shadow". [edit] Pronunciation IPA: /ˈædʌmˌbɹeɪt/, SAMPA: /"{dVm%br\eIt/ (key) Verb * To foreshadow vaguely. * To give a vague outline. * To obscure or overshadow.
[edit] Peculiarities
Unsettlers have no names. Pericles, now named, no longer fits the above description; he is either human or an ununsettler. (Or unadumbrate, which is much easier to pronounce.)
Besides this, again inferring certain particulars from Misty, it would seem that in his/her native form an Unsettler is not strongly affected by physical matter, even when rather visible.
[edit] Viewpoints
Think that a person made of solids is "gross," and that a person who is not blurred is 'like (he is) yelling.'
At least one Unsettler, Misty, is rather surprised by the random events of the Canvas. Perhaps all Unsettlers would be unsettled by other manifestations.
It would appear most Unsettlers do not like having names applied to them (Misty/Arica seems to be an exception to this rule. Aric expresses fears that doing so may have ruined a whole society.
